This month at Beulah Studios, we’re discussing how to make a small space feel bigger. We have many tips and tricks to help make your spaces appear larger and we’d love to share them with you!
A small space can be warm cosy and inviting. We want to help transform these everyday spaces into something wonderful and idyllic.
- Natural Light
Natural Light will improve a room and make it feel bigger. If you have shutters or blinds remove them or open them wide during the daytime. Allow natural light to flood the space and stream in, If your small space does not have windows incorporate lighting such as chandeliers and different size lamps throughout the space. Another pro tip is to use mirrors or glazing in the space this helps to reflect and bounce the natural light around the room.
2. Colour
It is often said to make a space feel larger paint it white. Yes, that is true, especially in open spaces like Kitchens and Living Rooms. The Key is to paint your woodwork, walls and floors all in the same shade of white. One of my go-to shades of white is Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball. It’s a warm, softer white very versatile and can be used in any small space. We’ve used this white on the walls and ceilings keeping the colour consistent throughout it tricks the eye and allows your eyeliner to continue without broken lines. Here’s an example of how colour can be used to create the same look, because this is on a plain it automatically darkens.
3. Pattern
Patterns cleverly used can be another way to increase a space. A great tip for this is to lay wall tiles and flooring on a diagonal in a small bathroom, entryway or cloakroom. Not only does it look beautiful, but infuses a room with energy, and can create a real focal point.
4. Scale
The Key here is to Go Bigger! Use bigger pieces than you would typically think this makes your home feel generous. Here are three pro tips on how you can do this.
Artwork: Large artwork will help your room feel big. Make it extravagant a statement piece.
Rugs: Use large rugs this helps to ground a space and add a warm and welcoming vibe. You can use rugs even if you have carpet. I love to use at least a 275 x 365 cm rug this is ideal for large rooms. If you have a smaller space opt for a 185 x 275cm or consider using a round rug.
Lighting: To create a cosy cottage feel use lamps on dimmers this helps to change the mood of the room and can be very magical when the lights are off. Use large lamps and incorporate a great chandelier. If you have low ceilings try a wide semi-flush mount chandelier.
5. Draw the eye up
Window Treatments. Hang the curtain pole as close to the ceiling and as wide as possible instead of at the window frame this accentuates the window, pulls the eye up and creates the illusion of a bigger space.
